Frequently Asked Questions

How and when do I enrol?
The school accepts Kindergarten enrolments from March the year prior to school entry and encourages families to submit applications to enrol by 1st August.

Applications must be submitted in person with the original documentation. See Enrolling in our school on the website for detailed information about proof of address requirements and to check if you reside within our catchment. .

How do I know when my child should start school?
Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on or before 31 July in that year. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday.

When to start your child at school is an individual decision. You may want to discuss this with us or with your child's preschool teacher, carer, and doctor or school teachers during Kindergarten orientation.

What transition programs are provided?
Yagoona Public School offers a comprehensive transition to school program called ‘Kindistart'. This program is held every year in Term 4. ‘Kindistart' allows a new student to become familiar with the school prior to their first day at school. While children are becoming familiar with the school environment through classroom activities there will be workshops held fo r the parents and carers. These workshops aimed at providing valuable information to support families in this extremely important transition. Please check the school website and school newsletter for dates this year or contact the school office.

Visiting the School
Anyone visiting the school must visit the office where our friendly office staff will assist with any enquiries. This includes parents and carers who are bringing their children to school late or picking them up early.

What do I do if my child is late or away from school?
Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

      •  has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
      •  is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
      •  is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
      •  is sick, or has an infectious illness.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible, or within seven days.

What do I do if I have to pick up my child early?
All early leavers must be signed out of the office prior to being collected from classrooms. Please respect that our staff have your child's safety in mind when they refuse your request without a note.

How does the school deal with medical issues?
The school needs to be notified of any medical conditions that affect its students prior to enrolment or immediately following any change. This includes asthma, anaphylaxis and other allergies. The school will develop a health care plan for students with serious or life threatening conditions that require management at the school level. If your child requires medication on a short term basis (for example flu, infections) please discuss with your doctor a medication plan that does not require medication to be taken at school. If this is unavoidable you must report to the office with the medication in its original packaging with dosage instructions clearly printed on the label.

Any student falling ill at school will be taken to the sick bay, next to the office. You will be contacted to take your child home if they present as ill or injured at school.

What do I do if my child is sick?
Please notify the school office if your child is sick or complete the online form ‘absence notification' via the website. A doctor's certificate is also required for longer absences or when the school requests one.

How do I place a lunch order for my child?
The school canteen is open Monday to Friday. Lunch orders are to be placed by 9am in the morning. Lunch orders should have the following information written on the lower half of a large paper bag - name and class, lunch request, total amount (if change is required, it will be taped to the outside of the bag).

Who do I see about any problems concerning my child’s education?
Any issues with your child's education or wellbeing should be directed to the classroom teacher. If you wish to speak to your child's teacher, please submit an interview request form via the website and your child's teacher will contact you to confirm a time.

Your child's teacher will refer issues that cannot be resolved at the class level or more serious issues to the school's executive or to the Learning Support Team for follow up.

How and when do I pay my School Contribution?
A note will be sent home at the beginning of each year advising the amount and due date for paying your School Contribution.
